A clogged or slow drain can be frustrating. In both the kitchen and bathrooms, no one has time for clogged or slow drains. While there are some plumbing issues that may be too difficult to handle, there are some things that homeowners can try when it comes to removing clogs in their drains before calling on the pros. The Original 49.95 Plumber is here to share some DIY options to help keep your drains clean on your own.
Plunger Method
If you don’t have a plunger in your home, they are pretty easy to find and cheap to purchase. They can be an easy way to remove clogs as well. Once you place the rounded end over the drain, you should use sharp fast movements to help move the clog that is stuck in the drain. If you notice the water starts to slowly move after working on it for 30 seconds, add some more water and repeat the process until water is freely moving down the drain again.
Boiling Water Down Drains
When you are dealing with a clog in the kitchen or bathroom, you can also try using boiling water to move the clog along. If the clog is made of organic matter, it can be melted away using boiling water. Use a large amount of boiling water down your drain to see if it can encourage your clog to dissolve.
Vinegar & Baking Soda
Baking soda and vinegar can often work together to clear out your drain when it is clogged as well. To start, you will want to pour half of a box of baking soda down the drain without adding any water to it. You will follow that by a half cup of vinegar followed by the drain stop to keep it inside the drain. The reaction between the vinegar and the baking soda should help the clog move down the pipe. After leaving it for 30 minutes, you need to follow that up with boiling water to see if the trick worked.
Other Tricks for Small Plumbing Clogs
If you have a small clog, you can get rid of it using a few easy fixes.
– Dawn Dish Soap: This can be helpful in removing clogs from your toilets sometimes. You should dump 1 cup down the toilet and let it sit for 15 minutes, followed by a bucket of boiling water.
– Borax: Mixing ½ cup of Borax with 2 cups of boiling water and pouring it in the drain and then allowing it to sit for 15 minutes can often help encourage a clog down.
– Alka Seltzer: Drop 4 tablets down the drain and then pour 1 cup of vinegar down the drain. Let that sit for 10 minutes and then follow with boiling water.
